Early Literacy Centers

The library’s early literacy centers (ELC) encourage learning through play. ELC spaces at the Main and Younkin Branch Libraries are designed for parents and caregivers to help their young children enter kindergarten ready to succeed.

Play engages children in many learning activities. When a young learner tells a story, they are practicing narrative skills. When a young learner balances blocks, they are using critical thinking skills, increasing attention span, and learning math skills like estimation and measurement. When a young learner paints or colors, they are strengthening the muscles that allow them to write their name.

The library’s goal is to provide all families opportunities to be active supporters of their young children’s development.
